Miss Peregines Home for Peculiar Children Movie Review

Joseph Bozzella, Staff Writer

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children is director Tim Burton’s latest film and stars Eva Green(Casino Royale, Penny Dreadful)and Samuel L. Jackson, among others. After his recent string of misfires, Alice in Wonderland, Dark Shadows, the acclaimed director behind such films as Batman and Edward Scissorhands, has made an attempt regain his stride with this film. The movie follows a teenager named Jake, played by Asa Butterfield (Hugo, Ender’s Game), and after a situation with his grandfather, goes to find the titular Ms. Peregrine. Here he finds out that he has special abilities and Ms. Peregrine runs a school for special, “peculiar,” children. The villain of the film is Samuel L. Jackson who wants to gain immortality by kidnapping Ms. Peregrine. The movie is extremely slow through the first one and a half acts since it has a lot of exposition to get through but picks up after the halfway point. At the heart of this film is a great group of characters, played by a wonderful cast, who give these characters depth. Burton’s strengths are highly evident throughout the film because of the use of practical effects and the creepy, but fun tone the film possesses. This film is basically Tim Burton’s version of the X-Men but is done in a fun way with Burton’s usual flair and whimsical nature.
