Harry Short and Brennan McEvoy are running for Student Council President under one clear message: Oratory First. Their campaign vows to put you, the Oratory student, at the center of every decision. That means improving school spirit, strengthening the brotherhood, and increasing student involvement, all by bringing fresh new ideas and real change to the OP community.
Brennan has been at OP since freshman year and is heavily involved at this school. He plays soccer, and runs Winter and Spring Track. He is also an integral member of the History and Politics club, and the Saint Philip Neri service club. Not only does McEvoy demonstrate perseverance and mental fortitude on the field and track, but he also serves others inside and out of the OP community. He constantly has a smile on his face, uplifting those around him.
Harry is a lifer here at OP, meaning he has been at OP since seventh grade. How many other candidates can say that? Harry plays Varsity Tennis and Track, as well as leading the Brothers in Faith Club. Harry also excels academically, constantly achieving Saint Philip Neri award even with a rigorous course load. I personally remember after freshman year basketball season, when our coach, Coach Rich, expressed that Harry was the hardest worker and had the most hustle on the team. This is displayed in his work ethic and how serious he takes sports and school. As he stated in his sophomore year speech, “Oratory Prep is my favorite place in the whole world”, and that’s not an exaggeration. Harry comes into school everyday with a positive mindset. You never see Harry in a bad mood, as he is outgoing and easy to talk to. That’s what you want in a leader. Someone who will show up for their brothers day in and day out no matter the circumstances.
Short and McEvoy believe that the student government is in need of new ideas. That’s why they have vowed to create the first ever Presidential Cabinet. This will bring new, fresh ideas into the mix to improve efficiency, and encourage involvement. This campaign also vows to bring back former traditions and privileges such as the Students vs Teachers basketball game, an Oratory Service Day, and revamp the student lounge in Bain. This day of service will expand Oratory’s service reach, allowing students to make a hands-on difference in the communities surrounding Oratory. Not only does Short McEvoy want to improve OP, but also the community around it. With this comes a stronger sense of community and brotherhood, a main priority for this ticket.
They also emphasize the importance of listening to their fellow students. They know what it feels like to not have their voices heard, especially as underclassmen. This is why they are creating monthly surveys and a suggestion box in the Student Lounge. This will give every student with an idea or suggestion the ability to help shape the future of the school. Oratory First means putting student opinions first, not their own selfish desires. McEvoy and Short are here to serve YOU. That’s what makes them different from everyone else.
Contrary to popular belief, this is not a popularity contest: It’s an election that decides the future direction of the school we love. Do you want OP to fall victim to an insufficient ticket that runs on false promises rather than proven results? Do you want to be misrepresented time and time again? The choice is yours on May 20th. But don’t mess it up, because you only have one chance to support the unprecedented school wide movement that is Oratory First.
