If there is one thing that I’m getting tired of, it’s that Rotten Tomatoes always rates video game movies with a low Rotten Tomatoes score. We saw this with the Second FNAF movie and the first Mario movie, with both receiving low scores. But, does the movie deserve this negative review? I went to find out and watched the movie twice. Here are my thoughts on it.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is a huge disappointment. It was honestly kind of sad to see how poorly they translated the game to movie form. Anyways, let’s talk about the positives. The visuals were stellar. The background and some scenes looked really pretty. Some of the action scenes were also really entertaining. The references were actually really nice to see. Some of the references in the movie are like deep cuts, like you might have to rewatch it in order to see all of them. The fights were actually really cool. Another thing that I liked was the relationship between Bowser and Bowser Jr. Their bonding scenes were actually wholesome. And that’s it for my positives for this movie.
Remember how the biggest problem from the last Mario movie was its pacing. It was just way too fast. Well, sorry to say that it’s much worse. I swear some scenes just pass through one eye and go through the other. Another problem was underutilizing characters, like Yoshi. He did absolutely nothing for the plot. He was only there because of money, I guess. Rosalina was also another underutilized character. She did have an important role in the original Galaxy Games, but she was only in the movie for at least 10 minutes at most. Finally, I found Fox’s inclusion in the movie to be a decision nonetheless. Fox’s role in the movie was barebones. All he did was transport the heroes to Planet Bowser, and that’s it. That’s all he did. The characters were boring. Mario and Luigi weren’t as enjoyable to watch as in the first movie. The plot was kind of boring. It was just your average space adventure. There was a lot of filler and some scenes that should’ve been deleted. But overall, this movie was kind of mid. For my final ranking, I will give this movie a 6/10. It probably won’t even matter because the movie is already making bank. My prediction is that its final box office total will be above a billion. In conclusion, if you are a Mario fan and want to see this movie, more power to you. This movie is the definition of Jingling Keys: The Movie.
