Coming off a 4-1 victory over the West Orange Mountaineers, the Oratory Prep Rams hoped to secure another big win. Playing again at Codey Arena, the Rams were set to face the then 1-0 Hoboken Redwings. The game began much like the last one, with both teams unable to score in the first few minutes. Oratory got its first goal with 9:25 left in the first, scored by senior Henry Zahn and set up by forward Jeff Child and defenseman Will Mazzei. From that point on, it was all Rams.
Freshman George Morgan, who made a name for himself after his one-goal, one-assist showing against West Orange in his debut, added the Rams’ second score on a tap-in at 1:13 (assist: Kevin Geiger). The only goal of the second period came from Zahn (assisted by Matt Moran and Child), giving the Rams a 3-0 lead. Going into the third, Hoboken still had no answer. With help from Geiger and Tom Walden, Morgan made a nice shot, knocking in his second at 1:02. Something special was beginning to unfold for the Rams. Both Morgan and Zahn had 2 goals, just 1 shy of a hat trick. Zahn would strike again at 4:30, this time assisted by Child and Mazzei, getting him his hat trick. And just 23 seconds later, at 4:07, defenseman Aidan Schulenberg and Walden got the puck to Morgan once more. Morgan tipped it mid-air and into the net, allowing the freshman to complete his hat trick as well.
The Rams would go on to win 6-0, their biggest blowout since their 10-1 win against Johnson last season. Zahn and Morgan each finished with 3 goals, while Child had 3 assists; Mazzei, Geiger, and Walden had 2; and Moran had 1, totaling 16 points. Morgan’s 3-goal night gave him a team-leading 4 on the season. With his assist from the West Orange game included, he has 5 points, tying Walden for the Rams’ point lead. Despite Hoboken’s limited offense, Oratory goalie Tom LaFrance had a good performance, finishing the game with an 8-save shutout. OP will head to Bayonne on Friday night to face the 1-2-1 Bees. On Wednesday, the Bees tied the West Orange Mountaineers 3-3. Oratory might have beaten the Mountaineers 4-1, but Bayonne is still a tough team, so the Rams will have to be ready for whatever comes their way. Every week, Oratory Prep Varsity Hockey continues to excite students, and it will be interesting to see what they do next.
Exclusive Interview #2 With Freshman Forward George Morgan:
Question #1: During our last interview, you said that Oratory wanted to “cause a lot of chaos in front of the net.” How do you think you and the team responded to that statement?
“I think that it stood true, and I think that we did a good job of confusing the other team, and it really benefited us.”
Question #2: How do you feel about your hat trick last Tuesday, making you Oratory’s goals leader with four and tying you for Oratory’s points leader with five?
“I’m really excited about it. It’s a great start. My teammates really helped push me, and it’s a great team effort.”
Question #3: What’s the team’s mindset going into Friday night’s game against the 1-2-1 Bayonne Bees?
“I think it’s going to be a tough game. They’ve got some good players. I think we are going to stick to the plan and not make it easy for them, and it should be a good game.”
