Ireland’s World Cup qualifying campaign has been a wild ride, full of drama, heartbreak, and last-gasp heroics from certain players. Ireland isn’t traditionally known as a country that is good at soccer, and they haven’t qualified for the World Cup since 2002. However, the tables are seemingly turning, as they have won several games to secure a World Cup playoff spot.
Their journey started off at home against Hungary, falling behind early to two first-half goals. But Evan Ferguson pulled one back after halftime, and when Hungary was reduced to ten men, Ireland kept pushing. In stoppage time, Adam Idah hit the equalizer, earning a 2-2 draw.
Next, Ireland traveled to Armenia, and things went south. They lost, 2-1. Eduard Spertsyan converted a penalty for Armenia, then Grant-Leon Ranos added another shortly after halftime. Evan Ferguson scored to give Ireland hope, but they couldn’t complete the comeback and came away with the loss.
They bounced back in style in their next big match, beating Portugal 2-0 at home. Troy Parrot scored both goals, and amid the tension, Cristiano Ronaldo was sent off in the second half, elbowing/punching an Ireland player out of frustration.
The defining moment of the team’s journey game was in their final qualifier. Away, in Hungary. Needing a win to secure a playoff spot, Ireland trailed by two goals. Parrot first equalized to make it 2-2, then in the 96th minute poked one in to secure his third goal of the match to complete an incredible hat trick and seal a 3-2 comeback win. He has become a legend in Irish soccer history over the last few days.
Through all of it, Ireland has shown real grit and belief, something they will need in the World Cup playoffs. After a shaky start, they closed out their campaign with two straight wins to punch their ticket to the World Cup playoffs.
