On Monday, October 27th, 20 students from the journalism and OMEGA groups attended a “Press” Day at Rutgers, and I was one of them. The goal of the day was to hone our press skills, as well as learn new ones effectively. I attended three different lectures that day and gathered some interesting information.
The first lecture I went to was one on generative AI. It focused on the strengths and weaknesses of AI, such as those of Adobe, and how it can evolve for the future. The speaker spoke about the ethics of AI, mentioning names such as Norbert Weiner and his idea of Machines evolving through time. The speaker also talked about Chatbots such as “Tay” who went up on twitter for a day before being bullied and becoming abusive. Finally the speaker went on about it being piviol. It is already widespread and mainstream and becoming scarily human, talking people into hurting themselves physically. Will AI fall as it grows, we will never know
The second lecture i went to was about visual storytelling. The speaker spoke about how we can tell stories through photography and it was very powerful. If we may not be seasoned writers, we can always tell a story a different way, photos for example.
The last lecture i went to was about opinions in writing. It was simple and but spoke about columns, Editorials and more. Hetalkede about how we can include these into our writing for school papers and what these parts truly meant.
Overall, the trip was very informative and taught me a lot about journalism and writing articles. There was information that anyone, interested or not, would benefit from and if you are interested in this topic, i suggest you join the OMEGA to have a chance at going on such excellent opportunity.
