Warning: there are spoilers to the first and second Black Phone so read at your own risk
Black Phone 2 felt underwhelming and overall mid. The original Black Phone was an amazing horror movie, probably one of the best of the entire decade. While some of the horror movies this decade have been good, like A Quiet Place Part II or Scream IV, those are just sequels. We don’t really get an original horror movie and when we do it is either underwhelming, disappointing, or bad. So I was completely surprised that the original Black Phone was good.Produced by Jason Blum from Blumhouse Studios, it followed a kid named Finney Shaw who gets kidnapped by a child murderer named “The Grabber”, who lures kids in with his “magic” van only to trap them in a sound proof room to kill them. Finney escapes with the help of the kids who were killed before him and from there he kills The Grabber by beating him with a phone receiver and choking him out with the phone cord all while his past victims’ ghosts taunt him. Overall, the first Black Phone was crazy and I highly recommend it as a Halloween movie night watch. Anyways, enough glazing from the first movie, let’s talk about the sequel.
Black Phone 2 was an alright horror movie. It had an ok plot but what really surprised me was that there were no deaths on screen. So there were 5 deaths in the entire movie but they were off screen. Instead of the Grabber surviving his death, his spirit roams and seeks revenge towards Finney, so he does this by luring him and his sister to where he killed his first victims at a Christian camp. There the three spirits whom the Grabber killed tells Finney and his sister that their bodies are in the lake that has been frozen over. So Finney and his sister must retrieve their bodies to set the souls free. But, the Grabber’s spirit is out there attacking them invisibly. But eventually, they find the bodies and the souls drag the Grabber back to hell. Overall, the movie had its moments but as a Black Phone sequel, it’s alright.
