NFL Playoffs: Conference Championship Review

The Super Bowl matchup has been set, and to many, the two teams featured in the yearly, iconic battle have disappointed many fans of the sport. On February 11, the San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs will go head-to-head in a clash for the Lombardi Trophy. In the eyes of many football fans, this matchup is very unideal, especially with both the Detroit Lions and Baltimore Ravens making their respective conference championships.

Before this season, the last time the Detroit Lions had made the NFC championship was in 1992. Also, the Lions have been in a playoff drought for over five years, not making the playoffs for over half a decade until this season. Fans of Detroit and all around the NFL were excited and rooted for these underdogs.

Not favored to beat Brock Purdy and the 49ers, the Detroit Lions had started their final game strong, going into halftime with a seventeen-point lead. However, due to poor performances from offensive skill players on the Lions, controversial play calls from Lions head coach Dan Campbell, and better performance from the 49ers offense, San Francisco came back from their large point deficit in the second half of the game and beat the Lions 34-31.

Lamar Jackson and the Ravens played against Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs. This game was important to Lamar, as a victory would prove to NFL fans that he is not a “playoff choker” and can lead his team to a Super Bowl. Sadly, Lamar and the Ravens were unable to defeat Kansas City, leading the Chiefs to their 4th Super Bowl in the past 5 years. Many people are questioning whether or not Lamar can get it done in the big games, given that he has only won 2 playoff games. Many fans argue that those two playoff wins were easy matchups, as the Ravens had faced Ryan Tannehill and rookie quarterback CJ Stroud. Nevertheless, he is the clear MVP favorite.

Regardless of who is playing, millions will still tune in to the game on Sunday, February 11th.
