Reaction to the Blockbuster Enzo Fernandez Deadline Day Trade

Sam Rothman, Staff Writer

January 31st is a day that every soccer fan knows. The transfer deadline day is when all the last-minute trades occur. Deadline day is one of the most exciting times of the year. This year did not disappoint as countless deals were made and some fell through.

One of the biggest deals that were never signed was Hakim Ziyech to Psg on a loan. The documents were misplaced and couldn’t be signed resulting in the transfer falling through. Barcelona tried to sign Arujo, an 18-year-old prospect from La Galaxy, but the documents were signed 18 seconds after the deadline day. Barcelona is appealing to FIFA to see if the transfer can be completed.

Out of all the transfer deadline day drama, no one expected a move for Fernandez. Chelsea’s 80 million and 100 million euro bids were turned down and Fernandez was gearing up for Benfica. The deal came as a shock because the transfer seemed impossible — no amount submitted was enough for Benfica. But Chelsea kept going and submitted an offer worth 130 million where 20 million euros will go to River Plate (part of the contract with Benfica he signed from River Plate).

Chelsea has made 20 signings this window totaling 600 million pounds. This might seem crazy which it is but one team has made more signings. Nottingham Forest has made 30 signings all on frees or under 10 million pounds.

Enzo Fernandez became the most expensive player in premier league history and Chelsea fans and soccer fans alike will be looking for him to live up to the expectations. Chelsea has all the right players but still remains in 10th place. The addition of Mudryk, Felix, Fernandez, Nkunku(this summer), Fofana, Badshialle, and many others should help on the attacking and defensive side.
