Interview with Star OP Fencer

Enzo Sarango, Staff Writer

Oratory Prep’s fencing team has a great group of guys that have consistently put out great individual performances. The fencing coach has done a phenomenal job in such a short time, “completely transforming the team.” Under his guidance, the boys have grown tremendously. A new member of the team is freshman Alex Martini, and he has been nothing but outstanding throughout the season. In an interview with Alex, he said that being one of the only freshmen on the team has its challenges. Alex has learned to push himself to perform to the best of his abilities, and he quickly gained respect from the older guys on the team.

Even though he has been fencing for six years, Alex mentioned how he still has lots to learn from the other guys. He has been a great addition to the team, getting individual victories against strong schools like Montclair, Governor Livingston, Millburn, and others. Despite the challenges, Alex feels grateful for the energy the boys bring to the team. He said, “The amount of support we give each other is unreal. While I’m fencing I can hear my teammates cheering me on and it really motivates me to try my hardest. When I win my bout and I hear the boys yelling to congratulate me, it is the best feeling in the world. We create a surreal atmosphere and support each other even when we lose.” He also pointed out how they all learn something from one another, and in the end, it improves the team’s performance.

Overall, there is much more to come from OP’s fencing program as the boys continue to improve. Keep up the good work boys!
