Aidan Philbrick, Staff Writer

Today I have the pleasure of interviewing one of Oratory’s fastest runners, and most decorated biker, Thomas Coder. This season Thomas has already eclipsed his previous PR and it is only the second race. I will be talking to Coder to see how he trains for his races and what he thinks attributed most to his success.

Thomas, what are your thoughts on the XC season so far?

I’m looking at this season through a lens of gratefulness. The opportunity to even have a season is good enough for me, so any opportunity to race is one I will gladly take.

How did you prep this summer to get a very strong start for the season?

In the summer, I like to bike a lot as a hobby but also as a way to get more fit. It works really well and the two sports complement one another flawlessly. A mixture of biking and running can really work wonders for fitness.

Is there any specific diet you follow?

I just eat whatever my mom makes, so Italian food if that is considered a “diet.”

Do you have any specific goal time for the end of the season?

Running 17:30 in the 5k would be ideal, hopefully circumstances allow for it! I’m focusing more on placements, since the courses we are running on this year tend to not be the fastest.

Is there anything you wish you could change about the way you race?

It would be ideal if I could improve my finishing kick, and just find that extra gear to complete a race a little bit stronger. Other than that, all the work comes through practice

Who are your 3 biggest role models when it comes to running?

Eliud Kipchoge – Most fit runner of all time in my opinion.

Joshua Cheptegei – Best distance track runner in my opinion.

Donovan Brazier – Most consistent runner in my opinion.

It is clear to see that Thomas has worked very hard not only this season but this summer as well, taking to the running and biking trails quite frequently. Thomas has had an incredible start to this season, however, it seems to be that the best is yet to come.
