A Look at Oratory’s Potential Tennis Team

A Look at Oratory’s Potential Tennis Team

Will Moran, Staff Writer

With the spread of COVID-19, it is unsure whether the spring sports will ever resume but Oratory’s Tennis team still stays optimistic. Before students were sent home because of the pandemic, the players were able to finish most of their challenge matches to determine their spot for the season. Multiple doubles pairs and three singles spots were established. Likely at first doubles will be seniors Luke Bernstein (Big Bert) and Andrew Stauffer. Luke has two years of experience at first doubles and an impressive run in the Union County Tournament last year with sophomore Arnav Chahal. His partner, Andrew Stauffer was out last season with a broken wrist but is expected to be a dominant force on the court this year. Another pair will be sophomores Matt Clark and Thomas Donofrio who both had strong challenge matches. This will be their first year on varsity but they seem to be very well rounded players. Another pair will be senior Sebastian Gould and junior Sebastian Bravo. This would be Bravo’s first year on varsity, but he will fair well with seasoned doubles player, Sebastian Gould. For singles, the players are junior Nick Carnevale, sophomore Arnav Chahal, and junior Will Moran. Third singles will either be Arnav or Nick, as the two were unable to squeeze in their challenge match before the season was paused. Second singles will then be determined off of that challenge match. If Nick wins he is second singles but he loses Will Moran takes the spot. If Arnav wins he is first singles but if he loses to Nick he is third. The order that stands now is as follows.

  1. Moran
  2. Carnevale
  3. Chahal

While the squad awaits the critical match between Chahal and Carnevale, all players are very prepared for each position they may hold. Carnevale has varsity experience from second singles last season and Chahal has the same at first doubles. Both players, however, are very quick and have very dominant strokes. Arnav has a deadly first serve while Nick has a lethal net game. While this is just a peek at the potential tennis team this year, the squad looks fully equipped to take on Union County and looks to get back on the courts soon.
