Remembering Corey Vita, an OP Legend

Remembering Corey Vita, an OP Legend

Lucas Toglia, Staff Writer

He is the “Unofficial Leader of Oratory”. He is the most interesting man at OP. He is Corey Vita. And I was lucky enough to have the chance to get to sit down with him during our last couple days of school. As a lifer, Corey Vita has been at Oratory since 7th grade. He started off at this school with his brother who was a captain of the cross country team as a junior when Corey was a freshman. Corey said it was fun to go to school with him. He made him feel comfortable and relate to others in the community by introducing him to students and teachers. Corey Vita will be running track in college at his Cross Country coach’s (Mr. McCrystal’s) alma mater, Holy Cross. He is excited to go to school there alongside his twin sister and described the school as a place that feels like home.

Now that it is time to say goodbye, it is not going to be easy. Although Allan is going to miss having a consistent patient to work with, Corey is ready to move on to the next chapter. He said that now is the time, but he will deeply miss the community.

Interesting fact about Corey: he sets the OP Instagram and OP rowdy Instagram for most likes on a picture and most views on a video. He also knows everything there is to know about Oratory. Everything.

Lucas Toglia: “How was Florida?”

Corey Vita: “It was fun”

Toglia: “What is your full legal name?”

Vita: “Corey James Vita”

Toglia: “What was it like to go to school with your brother [Andrew Vita]?”

Vita: “It was fun. He helped me feel comfortable and relate to other kids by introducing me to students and teachers.”

Toglia: “How did you decide on Holy Cross to run track?”

Vita: “I got the gut feeling. I looked at a lot of schools, but Holy Cross was the one school I felt at home and where I belong.”

Toglia: “What are your thoughts on going to college with your sister?”

Vita: “I’ve gone to school with my sister before. We were in classes together up to 6th grade. It’s kind of nice going back to school with someone you know”

Toglia: “So you’ve been at OP since 7th grade. What are your thoughts as it is almost time to leave?”

Vita: “It is bittersweet. This school is like family. I have great relationships with teachers and faculty. It will be hard to leave, but it’s time to move on.”

Toglia: “What will you miss most about Oratory?”

Vita: “The unique environment. There’s nothing like it. You can be whoever you want and no one is going to judge you.”

Toglia: “Anything you are not going to miss about OP?”

Vita: “I am not going to miss lunches because I never ate them, but I am going to miss Allan”

Toglia: “Did you have a teacher who really stood out to you?”

Vita: “Señora Treminio who left after my freshman year. As far as the best relationship, it have would be Mrs. Gribbin. She is the most relatable and most laid back teacher.”

Toglia: “Are you the self-proclaimed unofficial leader of Oratory?”

Vita: “I don’t know if I am not the self-proclaimed unofficial leader of Oratory. However, I am unofficial leader of Oratory. I know everything that happens. I have the most likes on an OP photo and video on the Oratory Instagram.”

Toglia: “Do you have a favorite memory at Oratory?”

Vita: “I have a lot of favorite memories. One of the best ones was in 8th grade when we went to the state final. The baby powder was everywhere. It later got banned. They had to stop the game to clear the air.”

Corey Vita is one of the most recognizable OP guys, and his presence will be missed at OP as he goes on to great things at Holy Cross, looking to break many records!!
