Heathers Review

The 1989 film Heathers, starring Winona Ryder and Christian Slater, is an interesting take on a teen film. It begins in the school cafeteria where we are introduced to the Heathers and Veronica (Ryder) when they have Veronica make a note to prank Martha Dunnstock into asking one of the football players out. Veronica then leaves her friends on the other side of the cafeteria to talk to the new kid J.D. (Slater). Following their chat, the boneheaded football players surround him, and, feeling threatened, J.D. whips out a .44 magnum. This movie went from 0 to 100 real quick. Then we get to the meat of the movie, where Slater’s character transforms from charming bad boy to a Joker-esque madman. I would say it’s the best performance Slater has ever given. The film even made suicide seem like a fad while Veronica and J.D. are the ones committing the murders. It’s one of those films that requires watching it at least once to decide your verdict, but the fact that there is both a musical and TV show in the works just shows there is a fanbase for it.
