Mr. Maybe Interview

Mr. Maybe is on his fourth year as a teacher here at Oratory. Before he joined the OP staff, he had attended Eastern Connecticut State University. In college, he played club Rugby and intramural softball, dodgeball, and basketball. He came to Oratory from St Mary’s Prep in Denville, New Jersey. At the time he knew Matthew Muoio, an Oratory alum. Mr. Muoio told him about an opportunity to come to the happiest place on earth, so after his trip to Disney World, he came to Oratory Prep for an interview as a Physical Education instructor. Sadly, Mr. Maybe did not initially get the job because of Mr. Daugherty; however, after Mr. Noonan left, Mr. Maybe was called into action.

As some may know, Mr. Maybe started as the freshman baseball coach before moving up to JV, and now he is the head varsity coach. As the freshman coach, his biggest struggle was getting freshman games scheduled. His main goal was to help the younger players so when they moved up to the JV and varsity level, they would be ready. When he was instated as the freshman coach, his wife gave birth to his daughter. He said, “It was a very exciting time for me.” The following year, when he moved up to JV, his goal was to build the team to his best ability and to both create relationships with the younger kids and teach the fundamentals, and, with that, they began to have success as the year progressed. As they started to win, they decided to move players from JV up to the varsity level, which Mr. Maybe said, “It was the right thing for the program, not just for the JV team”. He said his main goal is to always help the program, not just individual teams. He takes this mindset into this upcoming season as the head varsity coach. He believes that being a teacher in the school helped with his relationship with the players.

Last year, we had a hypnotist come into our school and hypnotize students and faculty. When I say faulty, I mean solely Mr. Maybe. When asked about his experience getting hypnotized, he said he did it not just for the teachers, but for everyone. He said that he doesn’t remember much about it, but he recalls it being very blurry and interesting. When I asked Mr. Maybe about his bromance with Mr. Daugherty, he said it was not love at first sight, rather it was a slow progression. Over time, it has developed into what it is today. Mr. Maybe said in the beginning of his first year, he focused on work more, but as the year moved on it blossomed into a great relationship. Then, when asked who would he want on a deserted island, he answered with Mr. Daugherty, mainly because he would crack jokes and keep him company. On another note, if Mr. Maybe was an animal, he believes that he would be a lion because he is the king of his own life, and, like a lion, he is the king of the jungle. His favorite vacation was on his honeymoon to St. Thomas, an exciting, fun, and very cool place with the pearl white sand. Finally, in relation to his name, his favorite “Maybe” pun was when a teacher said to him after not doing great on a test, “You did not do well on that test, Maybe you should try harder next time?”

As a kid, Mr. Maybe’s role model was Derek Jeter, but his favorite teacher was Brent who was his baseball coach at the time and is now the athletic director at Whippany Park. He is his role model because of the life lessons he tough young Mr. Maybe, and those lessons still apply to his life today. Also, his dream job was to be an ESPN sportscaster, but, later on, he realized that he wanted to go into physical education, teaching, and coaching. He is reminded of his glory days through his favorite song: “Glory Days” by Bruce Springsteen.

Overall, Mr. Maybe hopes to relay the message that if you’re not having fun at work, then you’re in the wrong job. He wants to help kids both on and off the field as a coach, teacher, and mentor. Mr. Maybe is excitedly looking forward a lot of firsts times this year: the first basketball game in the new gym, the first time being a varsity head coach, and his first trip to Florida for baseball. He is very excited about this year not just seeing the first class of kids that he taught at Oratory graduate, but also for meeting all the new kids he will meet, laugh with, teach, and mentor in the future.
