One of the newest classes here at Oratory is Engineering. Mr. Crum, the teacher for the subject, explains, “I hope to teach them the core concepts used in all branches of engineering.” As such, students are not learning exclusively about building and designing, but also other practical ideas that stem from engineering including technical writing, teamwork, and combining math and science. The curriculum is very diverse because if this. We began one class trying to explain how a clock works and eventually transitioned into discussing the cure for cancer.

In the upcoming semesters, the students are going to begin building projects. Mr. Crum says, “My favorite project is the bridge building project because it requires the students have to use math and calculations to build something actually tangible.” Another project entails using mentos, soda bottles, and nozzles to create high flying diet volcanoes. These hands-on projects are the culmination of every important aspect of engineering.

Many students are already enjoying the class. Sophomore Sean Pelcher says, “Engineering is a unique and enriching experience that is well preparing me for a future career in the subject.” Engineering is a fun class that has so many application and reinforces that time really does fly when you have Mr. Crum.
