OP Students’ Opinion on the New Schedule

Along with the addition of the Degaeta Hall, the new building, OP has implemented a block schedule effective for all students. Rather than having seven classes a day, each roughly 45 minutes, the new schedule has only four classes a day, 80 minutes each. In addition to this, the common work period was added to the schedule. This new period is 25 minutes long and allows the students to speak to teachers, work on group projects, and finish any last minute homework. However, this period shortens the lunch period, making it only 35 minutes. To gauge OP’s opinion of this new schedule, I asked several students from the classes of 2017 to 2020 and faculty.

Teachers

    Mr. McCrystal

  • “It has taken some time to get used to physically, but I do like the open-endedness of 75 min periods.”

Class of 2017 (Seniors)

    Chris McMahon:

  • “ I like it. The new schedule spreads out the class load and lets me get homework done in a more efficient way. I do half the due homework one night, and the other half the next night, but I never feel pressure to get anything done or do a massive amount of work. Also, this more evenly distributed workload gives me more time to focus on colleges as well as binging Netflix series. All in all, this new schedule gives me more flexibility to adequately get my work done and also have a life.”

    Adam Lewis

  • “I love the new schedule as it gives the OP community more time to get ahead of their workload as well as offering time during the school day to collaborate and meet with any teachers and/or students for extra help.”

Class of 2018 (Juniors)

    Corey Vita:

  • “I like the new schedule because it spans my classes out over two days. It isn’t as stressful due to only having four classes per day. The only dislike I have is that the CWP is 25 minutes. It would be nice to have a slightly longer period to get work done and see teachers.”

    Ian Moore:

  • “I like the new schedule. It works well with spreading HW on a nightly basis. It also provides more class time for work and “absorbing” the material.”

Class of 2019 (Sophomores)

    Fernando Aviles:

  • “It makes the day feel shorter, so it’s pretty nice.”

Class of 2020 (Freshmen)

    Brian McKegney

  • “I like the new schedule because it is giving me time to complete my homework that my old school never did. Instead of cramming in 7 assignments in one night I can space out and prioritize what needs to be completed. I think the “new” schedule is pretty good”

    Cole Noss

  • “I really enjoy the new schedule. As a freshman, I never had the experience to the old one but so far I like the new one. One thing I enjoy is the fact that I have 2 days to complete my homework. That way if a paper is assigned I can write it one day and edit it the next. Overall I enjoy the new schedule.”
