Batman v Superman Review

It’s taken 76 years for DC’s biggest battle ever to happen; the Sun God versus the Dark Knight; Night versus Day; Black versus Blue; Batman v Superman is here!!!

I’ll start with the performances which are not too bad. Ben Affleck actually turns in a great performance as Batman. He is intelligent, methodical, ruthless at some points, and unhinged. He was able to convince me that he was disturbed by the collateral damage of Man of Steel, and that he was going to do something about him. Jesse Eisenberg proves to be an annoyance as Lex Luthor, unlike his comic counterpart who is Machiavellian, intelligent, and manipulative; Eisenberg’s Luthor proves to be nebbish, annoying, and unnecessarily over the top (if you see the movie you will know what I’m talking about). Gal Gadot turns in a wooden performance as Wonder Woman (albeit she had little material to work with). Finally, Henry Cavill proves to be the screen’s worst Superman yet. Cavill’s Superman proves to be a jerk, distant, and an overall boring character.

As for the story itself, ohhhh boy the story. Let me tell you something, it’s got some problems. It feels like a weird patched-together story with too many stories that are trying to simultaneously set up a Justice League movie and try to tell a Superman and Batman story at the same time. Some parts feel very forced in an effort to try and advance this film universe to the Justice League movie. Other parts will make you laugh out loud – they’re that ridiculous. During such parts I turned to the person next to me and asked what on Earth is going?! The ending both angered me greatly and simultaneously wasted one of Superman’s greatest stories. On the positive side (excluding the fight between Batman and Superman which I found pathetic; they both threw each other around and then became best friends), Zack Snyder’s forte is his action scenes.

So in conclusion, Batman v Superman is entertaining to watch but not much to think about. It crams way too much into its story and should have had a quarter of it cut out. It angered me at the end (and will probably confuse you dear reader[s]), and gave the stupidest reason (not even Scott Lobdell could think of something so stupid) for them to form the Justice League. It pains me to honestly know that a historical movie for the comic book community failed.
