Manchester City beat Liverpool 3-1 on penalties in the Capital One Cup (or League Cup) Final last Sunday. City surprisingly took a defensive approach to the game. Liverpool started much better but City’s counter attacks always posed a threat. Aguero hit the post early in the game and Sterling missed really good chances throughout the game. Fernandinho struck first in the 49th minute; he received the ball on the edge of the box and took a shot from a tight angle. Mignolet somehow let the ball slip under his hands and City were 1-0 up. City’s defence held strong until the 83rd minute. After a scramble in the box, Coutinho scored on an open goal. Going into extra time, City continued to defend well, taking the game into penalties. Emre Can scored his penalty for Liverpool, Fernandinho hit the post with his and Lucas Leiva had his saved. At 1-0 in his penalties, Jesus Navas scored his while Coutinho missed his. Aguero scored his and Lallana had his saved. Yaya Toure stepped up and placed his penalty to the bottom left corner to win City the League Cup. The players celebrated with goalie Caballero as they lifted their second League Cup in three years.
