This past Wednesday, the second episode of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow premiered. And that’s all it was for the first half – a second episode. Sure it was interesting, it had some good character development, and I enjoyed watching it, but first impressions were over. That is until the third act of the episode came along. More on that later.

The premise of the beginning of the episode is to keep a stolen nuclear warhead out of dangerous hands. This part is fun, with Dr. Stein suddenly turning into a faux rage-filled crime boss, and an assortment of gun-toting villains planning to arm themselves with a WMD. This quickly turns into an all-out brawl, where, unfortunately Vandal Savage learns of the team and their powers. To make matters worse, Ray (the Atom) leaves behind a piece of technology that Savage will now use to turn into a superweapon. What I liked about this episode was the character development and the developing of characters. We get to see that Stein is actually kind of an arrogant jerk, a fact which tortures him. We also get insight into the fact that Captain Cold might’ve been a person more similar to Ray if he had not been born into a criminal family. We also see Cold and his partner Heatwave mesh better with the group. In fact, when Kendra (a.k.a. Hawkgirl) injured, it’s Heatwave who picks her up and carries her through a battlefield to safety. Speaking of battlefields, that brings me to my next topic.

As the first show to have a team bigger than one hero and two sidekicks, it seems we are going to be getting even larger battles. We have two full-scale beat downs in this episode alone! But, not all my opinions of this episode were positive. Rip Hunter had about four lines, and barely makes an appearance. He is shaping up to be the team leader who doesn’t connect with the team, the guy who only disciplines them for their mistakes. He does acknowledge his thankfulness for the team’s help, but honestly, his “favor” for Martin could’ve been done by anyone. Also, throughout the entire episode, Hawkgirl and Hawkman basically sat in a room trying to remember past lives. It wasn’t very interesting to watch. The shocking part of the episode has to do with them, however. In battling Savage, Carter Hall was fatally stabbed. Now, I’m not going to cheer for anyone’s death, not even fictional, but it says it all in the fact that Hall’s death didn’t provoke any sadness or even a twinge of emotion at all. Even when the team rallies around Carter’s memory to carry on the fight, it didn’t feel uplifting or inspirational, it’s just a scene. Now, don’t get me wrong, a main character’s death in episode two shocked me, and definitely made this episode impactful.

The good that comes of the whole thing is that now, maybe we can see Kendra relate with and form bonds with her other teammates. Since she remembered their 4000 year-old love story as Carter died, the emotional event will most likely make her character much more interesting to watch. I must say, I’m excited to see where the series goes next.
