Secret Wars

Secret+Wars

Carlo Zahl-Batlle, Staff Writer

If there is one thing that writer Jonathan Hickman loves writing, it’s Marvel’s first family, the Fantastic Four. And if there is one thing you take away from this truly universe-shattering story is a goodbye to a team that we won’t see for a long time. Secret Wars is essentially a story about two of the greatest rivals in Marvel’s history: Dr. Doom and Mr. Fantastic. Dr. Doom is now a God and rules over a patchwork planet made up of fragments of Marvel’s most famous stories. Three out of four members of the fantastic four playing integral parts in his world, and we the readers get to see the rise and fall of God Doom and his world.

The pros of this comic are many. We get to see artist Esad Ribic draw some amazing things. The Thing, Maestro, Groot, Doom, Thor, Mr. Fantastic, Maker, and Thanos have some truly epic moments in this series. Time was truly this series’ greatest enemy as this was supposed to end in around September of 2015, however the last issue only came out in January of 2016. So many delays ruined the book for lots of people. But there is no need to worry; all nine issues will be collected into one book soon enough.

This book was made for many reasons – some not the best of reasons. One was to bring Spider Man (Miles Morales) into the mainstream marvel comics alongside Peter Parker. The second being to restart Marvel’s 75 years of continuity (which it ultimately failed to do). The third and saddest reason was to get rid of the Fantastic Four – mainly because Fox will not give Disney their movie rights back.

But writer Jonathan Hickman honestly gives us a lovely goodbye to the Fantastic Four, who we will not see for a LONG time.
