So far, the new year for Manchester United has been better than expected. In United’s first game of the new year they went against Swansea City, and defeated them 2-1. In this game Wayne Rooney scored the winning goal on a cheeky heel kick. This goal was much needed for the skipper, as his lackluster season has drawn much criticism from the media. His 188th Premier League career goal also moved into second place for the second most goals in Premier League history. He is now only behind Alan Shearer, who netted 260 goals in his career.

The second game of the year was on January 9th in the FA Cup. Just as critics started to back off of Manchester United, they saw United’s downright awful performance against Sheffield United, who currently plays in the third tier of English Football. This game was putting people to sleep, until added time when Wayne Rooney netted a penalty kick with little time to spare. This gave them the 1-0 victory to move on to the fourth round in the FA Cup against Derby County. Although these performances have not provided much goal scoring, transfer rumors including Real Madrid star Gareth Bale have surfaced. These rumors have given United fans faith that their season can be turned around. This transfer could turn around United’s season, because it would fix their only problem, scoring.
