Apocalypse

So the trailer for X-Men: Apocalypse is here, and boy is Apocalypse going to destroy the world. But to those of you who are not familiar with the mutants from Marvel comics, allow to me explain the ones in this movie.

If you have seen any of the most recents entries in the X-Men franchise, then you will most likely know the returning characters. Jennifer Lawrence (The Hunger Games) returns as the blue shapeshifting Mystique, James McAvoy (The Last King of Scotland) also returns as the telepathic Professor Xavier. Michael Fassbender reprises his role as Marvel’s master of magnetism, Magneto, Nicholas Hoult (Mad Max: Fury Road) also reprises his role as Marvel’s smartest blue man, Beast. But enough with the old and on to the new.

The antagonist for the film is named Apocalypse (played by Oscar Isaac). Apocalypse (real name En Sabah Nur) has had a long history in Marvel comics. He was born in ancient Egypt and is largely considered to be the first mutant. Young En Sabah Nur was taught in ancient Egypt the philosophy of the survival of the fittest, a philosophy that evolved into a big part of his character. En Sabah Nur found the technology of a race of aliens called the Celestials and merged his body with said technology. This boosted his already strong power a hundred times over. Speaking of his power, he has a lot of it. Apocalypse is a strong telepathic who can fly, control his body down to the molecular level, increase his size, interface with various forms of technology, has a masterful control over energy based attacks (for example he can shoot energy blasts, he can generate energy from his own body, and many more), he is so strong his strength has been able to rival the Hulk, and a whole laundry list more of awesome powers. Plus, he’s also immortal.

Apocalypse does not act alone. He always has four accomplices with him that he calls his horsemen (yes, like the Horsemen of the Apocalypse). These four represent famine, pestilence, war, and death. Throughout Marvel comics, many people have been Apocalypse’s horsemen. People such as Wolverine’s son Daken, Marvel’s equivalent of Superman the Sentry, Magneto’s second daughter Polaris, and the Hulk. Apocalypses four disciples for this movie will be Angel as death, Magneto (presumably as war), and Storm and Psylocke as pestilence and famine. Angel (real name Warren Worthington) was a founding member of the X-Men, his mutant power is having wings (and as a Horsemen his wings are made out of metal [it looks way cooler than it sounds]). Storm (real name Ororo Munroe) is a longstanding member of the X-Men who can control the weather. And Psylocke is a fan favorite X-Men character who is a strong telekinetic and telepathic.

Finally, we have the newest students of Xavier’s school for gifted youngsters to go over. Founding member of the original uncanny X-Men, Cyclops(played by Tye Sheridan) joins the fray, his power is that he can shoot massive amounts of energy from his eyes. Jean Grey also enters Xavier’s school, her power is being a telepathic and a telekinetic. Nightcrawler “Bamfs” into the school as well, Nightcrawler is a mutant with blue skin, a tail, and claws, he also has the power to teleport (it usually makes the sound “Bamf”). Now, you are all caught up to speed with some useful information for Fox’s next endeavor with the mutants from Marvel comics.
