Flyin’ High with Nick Burd

Flyin High with Nick Burd

Patrick James, Contributor

Many of us may not realize it as we walk the halls of Oratory, but we are walking on the same ground where a legend once stood. His name is Nicholas Burd, and I recently had the chance to contact him for a few questions. The Legend of the Burdman started in 2008 when he came to Oratory. Early in his career, Burd made a name for himself as the grooviest dude on campus. Burd knew he needed more, so he joined the Cross Country and Tennis teams. For four years, Burd battled injuries and intensely fought through the pain to letter in Cross Country. He was the Art Club President and an avid Tech Club member. In 2014, Burd went north to attend Marist College where he is studying Computer Science with alum Peter Sofronas (‘14).

Q: How intense is life at Marist?

A: Life at Marist is overall pretty relaxed. The coursework is demanding but it’s a good atmosphere.

Q: How did the Oratory experience prepare you for college?

A: The Oratory experience did a fantastic job preparing me for college, especially the math classes and Mr. Horan’s AP Economics class.

Q: If I told you the boys were going out tonight, where would you be?

A: If the boys were going out tonight, I know we would all be headed over to Buffalo Wild Wings for an epic night.

Q: If you and Mr. Jordan had an all-out coding war, who would win, and why?

A: Mr. Jordan would win in any coding competition over me since he is the greatest hacker at Oratory. I wouldn’t even stand a chance. Let’s be honest here, he’s a boss, and no one beats the boss.

Q: What’s your favorite memory in Room 104 (the Bio Lab) at Oratory?

A: My favorite memory from Room 104 is definitely not playing games in the back during Ms. DeMichino’s Bio class.

Q: How do you feel about the Blue Ribbon?

A: I feel very strongly about the blue ribbon. What’s the blue ribbon?

Q: If you could give some advice to the freshman at Oratory, what would it be?

A: Some advice I would give to the freshman at OP would be to pay attention in their math classes. It is definitely going to help you in college.

Q: Chromebooks are still being used. Thoughts?

A: In regard to Chromebooks being used in school, I am entirely disappointed that such subpar computers are being used. I am biased towards maxed out and fully upgraded gaming laptops.

Q: Do you have anything to say to the Cross Country team?

A: I hope the Cross-Country Team is still going hard and has had a great season. I hope that hill day is still as fun as I remember!

Q: “Are you still rocking 2 minute abs?” – Mr. McCrystal

A: Of course I’m still rocking 2 minute abs! The Burdman never stops doing abs!

Q: Collab? Who with?

A: Kanye West.

Q: Who was your favorite person at Oratory, and why was it Michael Manna?

A: Michael Manna is the obvious choice for my favorite person at OP because he’s just such a champ at everything, especially tennis.

Q: Who is your favorite new teacher at Oratory?

A: My favorite new teacher at OP is definitely Mr. Roccella. I’ve heard good things, keep it up.

Q: In your yearbook you said you wanted to be remembered for your delicious cookies that brought joy to the world. Next time you visit, would you be willing to bring some in?

A: Absolutely!

The legend of the Burdman lives on.
