The Oratory Prep Varsity Hockey Team gave its seniors a senior night to remember, winning 4-0 against West Orange on Friday night. The night started out with a nice tribute by Mr. Boniello to Joe Bizub, Liam Breen, Jake Gertz, Brian McGovern, Michael Middlebrook, and their parents. Following the ceremony the game began, with Oratory taking control early. They finally broke the deadlock about halfway through the first period, with Junior Owen Durkin getting on the end of a Mike Middlebrook’s pass. The Rams had a 1-0 lead until 6:30 left in the second period, when Jake Gertz ripped a shot past the West Orange keeper. Gertz was at it again just four minutes later, as he received the puck from Liam Breen and added a second goal to his name. Oratory came out flying in the third period, and Michael Middlebrook finished off a goal and assist performance for himself with an absolute rifle from the blue line that the West Orange keeper could not stop. Brian McGovern was marvelous in net, knotting his first shutout of the season, and making sure West Orange was kept at bay every time they tried to get back into the game. The result takes Oratory to 5-15, and they’ll be looking to get a sixth win when they take on High Point High School next Friday at 5:40 at the Skylands Ice World in Stockholm.
