January Transfer Window Closed

John Abilli, Writer

The January transfer window is now shut and clubs around the world, and mainly Europe will hope to finish their respective seasons strong with the players they have. The following are some of the major transfers:

Gabriel to Arsenal

Arsenal signed Villarreal center back, Gabriel, 24, for 11 million pounds. Despite not speaking English, Gabriel can be a helpful back up for Arsenal, who only had 3 center backs before this signing.

Juan Cuadrado to Chelsea

Possibly the biggest signing of the window, Juan Cuadrado has joined Chelsea from Fiorentina. The 27 million pound winger will be fighting Willian for a starting place. He’ll easily be Chelsea’s fastest player and will help the team fight for the Premier League.

Bony to Manchester City

In a surprise deal, Wilfried Bony has joined Manchester City for 25 million pounds. The striker was the top scorer for Swansea before catching Manuel Pellegrini’s eye. The Ivorian striker will join up with City after the Africa Cup of Nations. He might start up top with Sergio Aguero.

Defoe to Sunderland

After one season with Toronto FC, Jermain Defoe signed with Sunderland for an undisclosed fee. Now the officially the most transferred player in January (9 times) will hope to get Sunderland above the relegation line. He will fight for a starting striker spot against Graham and Fletcher.

Doumbia to Roma

Slipping in the title race in Italy, Roma have retorted to FIFA tactics by signing pacey striker/winger Doumbia. The 27 year old played for CSKA Moscow before making the switch. He’ll add speed to Roma’s slow frontline.

Destro to AC Milan

AC Milan has made a great signing by loaning Destro from Roma. Milan is struggling this season, and much of it is down to their poor forwards. The former Chelsea targets shooting ability will help Milan move up in the table.

Eto’o to Sampdoria

In a surprise switch, Samuel Eto’o has gone to Sampdoria after only 6 months at Everton. Although the Everton boss praised Eto’o many times, he hasn’t been getting a lot of playing time lately. Sampdoria got him for free and he will definitely help Sampdoria keep up their good form this season.

Shaqiri to Inter Milan

After a great world cup, Xherdan Shaqiri has joined Inter Milan from Bayern for an undisclosed fee. Despite the great showing in the summer, he was benched at Bayern, and needed a move. The fast and powerful winger will definitely help Inter, considering that they don’t have many wingers. He will plop right into the starting XI and score many goals for the underperforming Italian team.

Odegaard to Real Madrid

After months of speculation, 16 year old, Norwegian wonder kid, Martin Odegaard, has finally decided to join Real Madrid. For a fee of around 3 million pounds, the youngster will look to do well in Real Madrid’s youth team and make it to the first team. He was linked with Liverpool, Barcelona, Bayern, and other teams. He played for the Norwegian national team just last year!
