The Math Club here at Oratory, led by Mr. Cuddihy and Dev Malhotra, class of 2028, offers many exciting opportunities for Oratory students in grades 9-12 to explore the field of mathematics. I sat down with Dev to learn more about the Math Club and all of the exciting opportunities the club offers, and what new members can expect to learn from participating.
Dev started the Math Club in middle school and brought it with him as he transitioned into the upper school. The Math Club has grown tremendously since its formation in 2023. The club has been involved in numerous competitions, allowing members to learn more about applying math to the real world and problem-solving. “For me,” Dev stated, “I’ve developed a better understanding of how math meshes together, and it’s really improved my study and organizational skills.”
When asked about what members of the club have to look forward to, Dev told me that the club meets weekly with Mr. Cuddihy and each year, travels to Cornell University to partake in a full-day event where members explore different areas of math and compete for the chance to take home awards based on their performance.
Dev added that beyond competing, Math Club is a great place for community building and bonding, “In a competitive environment, I feel more connected with my peers,” he shared. “There’s a lot of collaboration on the team.”
The Math Club is also a great place for students to strengthen and build upon their math skills. “Math Club is a harder application of mathematics,” Dev explained. “When you’re exposed to these kinds of questions, you tend to do better on math exams because of the skills they require.”
When asked about what kind of student is the best fit for the Math Club, Dev believes that anyone curious about math and the world around them, and who isn’t afraid of commitment, is a great fit for the club. “A hardworking student who has a passion for math would be a great fit,” he said. “You don’t need to be incredibly skilled or talented, you just need to have an interest.”
Students interested in joining the Math Club can email Mr. Cuddihy at [email protected] and Dev at [email protected] to be added to the Math Club’s Google Classroom.
