The second Season of HBO Max’s Peacemaker is now halfway done, and it has definitely kept up its quality. It isn’t like this was really something that was in question, though, but it is still nice to see. As of writing, this Season only has two episodes left to be aired.
I thought that the reveal of the alternate universe being filled with Nazis was predictable, yet still very enjoyable. It did seem pretty obvious that the world where Peacemaker’s white supremacist father was a renowned hero had something wrong with it. Despite this, I did enjoy how the reveal happened as everything went simultaneously wrong for each of the main characters.
One small peave that I have with this Season is how Vigilante has been somewhat sidelined. He was previously only really important in Episode 2 when he helped clean up the alternate Peacemaker’s body. From then until Episode 6, he has only had a minor presence. However, I did find the scene of him laughing at every minute difference he spots in his house in the alternate reality really funny, so that did somewhat make up for it.
The side plot with Eagly and Red St. Wild, the eagle hunter, was an incredibly fun diversion from the main story. Red St. Wild was a funny and unique character, played by frequent James Gunn collaborator Michael Rooker, and him being a white man who constantly appropriates Native American culture was so unusual, while also being hilarious. I really hope that Eagly being the “prime eagle” doesn’t come up again, because it would be very funny if that reveal was only for a one-off joke. My only issue with this subplot is that I never particularly liked the CGI on Eagly, so his being on screen does take me out of the show somewhat.
The appearance of Lex Luthor was definitely surprising. Having characters from the big movies isn’t really something new for this show, with how this Season previously had the Justice Gang. Still, Peacemaker, being a mature show about an obscure character, will always make it feel disconnected from the rest of the DCU, no matter how many times they cross over. I still have not seen Superman yet, but Nicholas Holt’s captivating performance as Luthor in this show makes me want to see it sooner rather than later.
Overall, this Season has felt like it has gone by pretty fast. It is hard to believe that there are only two more episodes left of this Season, and possibly even the whole series, as Season 3 is currently unconfirmed. For now, though, I will be looking forward to the conclusion of this Season.
