Marvel Zombies is a continuation of one of What If’s episodes during its first season. The original What If? episode follows a zombie virus that infects iconic characters into becoming horrific zombies whose only goal is to feast on the survivors. The concept of zombie Marvel characters originated in the Ultimate Fantastic Four comics in 2005, which led to a limited series from The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman. An episode of the 2021 animated series What If? introduced a version of this story into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) multiverse. When the original What If? dropped, a lot of Marvel fans really enjoyed the zombie episode because most fans liked the concept of a zombie apocalypse survival world in the MCU and wanted more. So, in November 2021, they announced that a Marvel Zombies project was in production and fans were hyped. The director, Bryan Andrews alongside the rest of the team who worked on the original episode were going to work on the project , so hopes were high at first. It was originally supposed to be a movie, however there were some creative differences when it came to including some characters, so it was chopped down to a four-episode limited series. Unfortunately, while in production, most fans were growing inpatient and thought the idea was cancelled.
Finally, on September 4th of 2025, nearly 4 years after it was announced, we finally got the official trailer that had the faithful release date of September 24th of 2025, premiering on Disney +. Fans were hyped. They had finally waited long enough to finally get to watch their show at the comfort of their home. It was the first Marvel animated show to get a TV-MA rating so that the producers could show that messed-up gore you’re going to get out of a zombie apocalypse. I had already watched and completed the show so here is my opinion.( spoiler free)
The show is pretty good. I enjoyed some of the fight scenes, the ending was insane, and the character choices, who the writers thought would survive the apocalypse, were ok. However, to me it felt as though it was rushed and was put out there because the demand was high. I still enjoyed it and would recommend it to watch if you have Disney +. The reception so far has been pretty positive and we most likely see more in the future. Hopefully, Marvel doesn’t mess up like with the 2nd and 3rd season of What If? Those seasons were not great and felt rushed to make a quick buck. Anyways, What do you think of Marvel Zombies? Was it worth the wait?
