Him Movie Review
Spoilers ahead
Last week I got the chance to see the latest horror movie in theaters, Him. Him is a sports psychological horror movie, which is a very rare breed. I had never seen a sports horror movie before. When I saw the first trailer months ago, I was immediately intrigued. So, did it live up to the hype?
No.
Unfortunately this turned out to be a very shallow horror movie. There were a million different, fun, and unique ways that the makers of the film could have gone, and this was the very reason why I was so excited for this movie. However, they went in a basic direction that I had a bad feeling that they would go. The plot of the story goes like this: Cameron Cade is a rising quarterback who suffers a potentially career-ending injury after being attacked by an unhinged fan. Just when all seems lost, Cam receives a lifeline when his hero, Isaiah White, offers to train him at an isolated compound. However, as the training accelerates, Isaiah’s charisma turns into something darker. The movie separates each day of the training into its own part. However, by day 4 of 7, you are ready for the reveal and want the movie to end. There is just nothing really intriguing going on. It isn’t until around day 6 where we start to pull back the curtains and get reveals. As I had suspected, it turns out that the team that Cameron aspires to play for is a cult, and the only way to become the starting quarterback, or the “goat”, is to defeat the current one, which in this case is Isaiah White (Marlon Wayans). In the end, Cameron does defeat Isaiah and becomes the starting quarterback. However, as he is about to sign his contract, it is revealed by the owners that Cam had been groomed since childhood for this moment. They even arranged for the head injury that isolated him and made him desperate enough to accept Isaiah’s training. It is also implied that his father’s death was manipulated to keep Cam focused on football. After figuring this out, Cam goes on a rampage and kills all the owners and his agent.
Overall, this movie was just messy and boring. I knew after 10 minutes of watching the movie that this was a cult movie, and it kind of seems like the writers took the easy way out. I was so excited to see them go in a totally different direction and create a unique ending, but my hopes feel short. I give this movie a 2.8 out of 5.
