A few months ago, Oratory welcomed its newest member of the physical education department, Mr. Beneventine. If his name sounds familiar, his sister, Mrs. Beneventine is the Head of Guidance and Special Services here at OP. While he has only taught here for a few months, he has already made an impact on the community for his laid back and outgoing personality. In a recent interview, Mr. Beneventine shared his personal experiences that has led him to OP, his favorite parts about teaching here, and his goals for the future.
What do you want people to know about your background, and what led you to become a gym teacher?
I graduated from Montclair State University with a degree in K-12 PE and Health. I am the Associate Manager of an indoor sports complex where I also serve as the academy Goalkeeper Coach for high level soccer players.
What class/classes will you be teaching here at OP?
At OP I teach freshman and 7th grade health – freshman, 8th and 11th grade PE.
What is your favorite part about teaching here so far?
The welcoming environment by all and the highly motivated student body.
What role do you think physical education plays in a student’s well being?
Physical education plays a vital role in showing the students the importance of living a healthy lifestyle not just physically, but mentally as well.
You spent some time as an interim gym teacher here a few years ago, what stuck out to you about OP that caused you to come back?
The strong sense of school spirit and pride by all.
What are some of your hobbies or interests outside of school?
I enjoy fishing, hiking, spending time at the beach, playing soccer, cooking, exercising and spending time with friends and family.
What goal(s) do you have for yourself and/or your students for the remainder of the year?
Goals I have for my students is for them to strive to be the best they can, to not be afraid of embracing new challenges in their lives and to be motivated to make a positive difference in each other’s lives.
