This year, Oratory saw the creation of the Sports Broadcasting Club, a club focused on casting and commentating on the various sports OP has to offer. Some of the club’s members, such as Michael Mascera, Devon Mulvaney, and Phil Soliman, covered many of Oratory’s basketball games this season, giving viewers at home game insights and predictions while doing play-by-play commentary. I had the chance to catch up with Phil, who is one of the club’s founding members, to ask about his thoughts on the club’s first season. It was clear to me that he was excited about the club, stating that he helped bring it to OP “Because we all have a strong interest in broadcasting and we all are passionate about calling games.” Many people have expressed interest in the club, making it obvious that this club is already becoming central in Oratory sports. Commentating on games creates a new level to broadcasting. Phil believed the club’s commentating “recorded memorable moments from the season” that fans could watch back and continue to get hyped about.
Phil and I had a great conversation about the club’s first season, and he even gave me some insight on its future, explaining that next year, the club “want(s) to do more than just basketball so there are more games to call and more opportunities for others to get involved.” He believes that the future of the club looks bright, and he even had some advice for aspiring young broadcasters. “Present your emotions on the mic, make sure to be yourself, and just enjoy it.” The club doesn’t seem to be going anywhere, and I sure hope it doesn’t. One thing is for certain: the Sports Broadcasting club has brought a new burst of energy to OP sports, and I am excited to see what it has in store for the future.
