Freshmen basketball: the team that no one cares about except for the parents and a couple of freshmen. For all of those people that care, here is the freshmen basketball update. After the team started off the season with a rough 0-4 start, the Freshmen basketball team had quickly bounced back with close wins over Roselle High School and against Hillsborough. After these two wins, the team lost a close one to New Prov in a back-and-forth game the whole time. This loss really hit most of the players, as it was a game that could’ve been won. The next game was probably the worst game of the year, where we played awful and didn’t play to our expectations in a game against North Plainfield. This was a game that definitely should have been won but wasn’t. After this loss, we put in lots of work and preparation for our next game against Summit, so a game like North Plainfield wouldn’t happen again. The game against Summit was a crazy one, where the point guard for Summit hit a game-tying three-pointer as time expired. The game went into overtime, and OP continued to fight, and come out of Summit with a win. Freshman Nick Yanuzzi came out of Summit with 32 points in the game. OP’s record was now 3-6, but we were determined to get above the .500 mark for the first time all year. In order to do this, the team would have to win their next four games against Bernardsville, New Providence, Pingry, and Jonathan Dayton, an undefeated team. The freshmen team seemed to do the impossible, and won all four of these games in fashion, with an OT win against our biggest rival in New Prov, and against rival Jonathan Dayton, who at the time was undefeated. The team’s record is now 7-6.
