Freshmen sports are often left in the dust, as almost everyone would want to root on the Varsity team rather than the freshmen team. However, people always forget that almost every Varsity athlete begins at the freshmen level, and moves up the ranks through coaching and training. This years freshman basketball team is composed of four lifers and nine new students. The team has a lot of promise, with a lot of depth. Mr. Baressi, the freshmen basketball coach, describes the team as “one of the most athletic teams I have ever coached, and a team that can run the fastbreak extremely well.” The team played their first game of the season this past Friday on “Hypemas”, and the team also played in the first real game ever in the brand new DeGaeta gym. The freshmen started off quite slow against the tough team of Bishop Ahr, but the team never gave up. OP was down by twenty at halftime, but the guys continued to be tenacious and continued to give it their all. They truly never gave up, leaving some positive upsides for the upcoming future. The team definitely has a lot of improvement to be made, but there are sparks of greatness every so often each time the team plays. Be on the lookout for one of the best freshman basketball teams at OP history, led by point guards James Boylan and Logan Drone, shooting guard Nick Yanuzzi, and forwards Jack Greco, Jeremy Smith, and JJ Gillette. The freshmen team plays their next game over the winter break against Roselle Catholic during the holiday tournament, hosted at OP.
