Last week, something insane happened over at Marvel and no one is talking about it. Can you guess what it is, dear reader? It’s not an editor pretending to be a Japanese man or a critically acclaimed writer leaving Marvel for DC. After a 4 year absence from comics, in Doctor Strange issue 382, in an effort to conform to the new “Legacy” idea of bringing back old Marvel characters and themes, the veritable Superman of the Marvel universe was reintroduced. His name is Robert Reynolds, but to the world, he is golden guardian of good, THE SENTRY!

Lemme reign it back. Marvel has a couple Superman allegories. There’s Hyperion, picture Superman but a jerk. There is the Blue Marvel, Superman but black, really smart, and with literal god-like powers. There’s Miracleman, who is albeit a parody of Shazam but he’s a parody of Superman, so I guess he’s a parody of a parody. There’s Gladiator, Superman if he had purple skin, a sick mohawk and ran a space empire. But no one is cooler than the Sentry. He’s fought the Hulk at his angriest to a standstill, fought a Celestial(a giant planet creating space robot), and a lot of other crazy stuff. What makes the Sentry so cool is that he’s literally is own worst enemy. The Sentry’s mortal enemy is a being called the void, who happens to also be Robert Reynolds. He’s essentially Marvel’s schizophrenic Superman. The best part of the Sentry was always his wildcard nature. You never knew what he was going to do next. One minute he checks himself into a super prison for some reason, the next he tries to blow up the world, or he makes all the heroes forget who he is. Bringing the Sentry back into the fold lets writers play around with a character who when done right can be a character way more interesting and compelling than his DC counterpart.
