With only three games left in the Premier League season, Manchester United looks to move up into fourth place, in order to qualify for the UEFA Champions League. At this current time, Manchester United sit in fifth place four points behind Manchester City, and five points behind Liverpool, with a game in hand.

Another way United may qualify for the Champions League is through winning the Europa League. Currently, they are in the Semi-Finals of the second-tier European tournament and are playing Celta Vigo. After winning the first away game 1-0, United hopes to move on to the finals on May 11 by winning or tying at Vigo at home. (They will play Lyon or Ajax in the final)

United plays second placed Tottenham, Southampton, and Crystal Palace in the three remaining games of the season. At the same time, fourth-placed Manchester City plays Leicester City, West Brom, and Watford: much more winnable games. However, Liverpool only has two games left, against West Ham and a last placed Middlesbrough side. Since this is the case, Manchester United has a much more difficult three remaining games.

United has been plagued by injuries this late in the season (losing their two best players in Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Paul Pogba). These key injuries have led to United dropping points almost every match and led to the most unimpressive 25 unbeaten streak of all time. United has also not capitalized on many opportunities given to them by other teams in the league. Many times when a top four team had dropped points and gave United the chance to move up into their position, they did not win the game and remained in fifth or sixth place.

Champions League qualification is very important for Manchester United this year. After not qualifying last year, United has been losing credibility as one of Europe’s top teams in the past five years. Also, United has been linked to the transferring of many world class players this summer, such as Atletico Madrid striker Antoine Griezmann. However, their arrivals hinge on Manchester United qualifying for the Champions League.
