  1. Computers are being shut down by an NSA ransomware

Computers worldwide are being hit by a ransomware worm called “Wannacry”, which was derived from an NSA exploit. The NSA exploit was publicly released last month by the “Shadow Brokers”, a hacker group. About ninety-nine countries and at least 75,000 computers have been infected by “Wannacry” during the publication of this article. “Wannacry” has infected banks, hospitals, train stations, telecommunications services and other organizations in at least 74 countries including Ukraine, India, Taiwan, and Russia, who are suffering the most. The malware has been demanding a ransom of three hundred to six hundred Bitcoin which is about a half of a million to one million USD. The payment must be paid by the fifteenth of May, or if the deadline is missed, then a higher fee must be paid by the nineteenth.

       2. Durham Police using AI to decide fate of inmates

The police in Durham, England are preparing to initiate their new artificial intelligence system which will be used to determine if a suspect should remain in custody. The AI works by classifying individuals based on the risk of them committing a future offense. The AI was made by using the Data for the Harm Assessment Risk Tool, which looked at police records in Durham between 2008 and 2012. A test of the system was conducted in 2013 and its results were monitored for two years. The test showed that the system was ninety-eight percent right when predicting if a suspect has a low risk of committing a future crime and was eighty-eight percent right when the suspect has a high risk. The police will use the AI to help decide if a suspect should remain in custody and if bail should be offered.
