While the mainstream media has officially decided to focus all of their attention on the major party candidates, Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, other third-party candidates have barely gotten any attention. Half of America has been undecided for months on end, not even considering the alternative Libertarian candidate, Gary Johnson or Green Party candidate, Jill Stein. This lack of consideration shows in polls. According to a CNN Poll of Polls, which is a collection of all news network polls, Gary Johnson and Jill Stein share a combined average of 10 percent of voters’ support.

Gary Johnson, for those of you who are not familiar (if you are one of these people, do not worry, I was unaware of their presence in the presidential race until very recently) is the Libertarian candidate who served as Governor of New Mexico in the early 2000s. He is running on a ticket with the more popularly acclaimed former Massachusetts Governor William Weld. Together, they are fighting for issues including, but not limited to, liberty and the fact that “all individuals are sovereign over their own lives and no one is forced to sacrifice his or her values for the benefit of others,” according to the party’s platform preamble. Interestingly enough, this is not the first time Gary Johnson has run for office. In fact, in 2012, Gary Johnson ran as both a Republican and Libertarian candidate. After dropping out of the race on the Republican side, Johnson joined the Libertarian party, ultimately becoming their nominee for that election season, proving that many people are not as aware of third-party candidates as they are major-party candidates.

As forgotten as Gary Johnson is, Green party candidate, Jill Stein, manages to be even more forgotten among the American voters and election followers. Jill Stein has been the Green party nominee for the last two election seasons, without much success. Although she has no political experience whatsoever, she has insisted on a run for Governor of Massachusetts twice. She has met with failure both times. The highest political role she has ever gotten is the great “honor” of being a Member of the Lexington, Massachusetts Town Meeting from 2005-2011. However, she is beloved among the Green party community for her excessive attention to our environment and the welfare of America.

Although these candidates have been forgotten in the midst of one of the most intense presidential election seasons in American history, they have done what they could. However, with little support, they are unable to move forward. Without attention from voters, these candidates have not been able to gather any big name endorsements from other American politicians. With this said, we must provide these candidates with “some” attention. So, the next time someone mentions Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump without a word about Gary or Jill, be sure to enlighten them, even if no one knows who you’re talking about.
