Winter Meetings 2K15

Ah, winter meetings. The time of year where baseball fans get their faces glued to their phones and wait for their team to sign the next Babe Ruth. Well, maybe not Babe Ruth, but anyone they think will get their team to baseball’s Holy of Holies, the World Series. This year, the free agent pot is full of talent, both young and old, who will earn record-breaking contracts. So let’s do a little recap of where baseball’s best available signed and where I know (think) they will sign.

  • David Price, SP (BOS)- Arguably the best free agent available and the best decision made this offseason. Not only did he sign with my Red Sox, but he signed a contract that will make him the highest paid pitcher in the history of baseball.
  • Zack Greinke, SP (ARI)- The biggest surprise signing award goes to Zack Greinke. With the Diamondbacks coming out of nowhere to sign him, they not only add unbelievable talent to their rotation, but veteran leadership as well. Like Price, Greinke is also getting the big bucks too.
  • Ben Zobrist, 2B (Cubs)- Sorry Mets fans, but Ben Zobrist clearly had other plans than to sign with an organization that’s been giving their fans headaches and heartbreak since the 80s. So that’s why he decided to sign with the Cubs. An organization that’s been doing that to their fans for triple that time. Makes sense, right? But just like Price and Greinke, Zobrist got some money for someone his age that probably’s going to be washed up before his contract’s half way up.
  • Yoenis Cespedes, OF (Free Agent)- A guy who made headlines last year in New York for hitting dingers is now waiting for teams to throw all their money at him. Will the Mets keep him? Probably not because the Mets don’t have that kind of money, but this is baseball and anything can happen. So where will Yoenis and his eyebrows land? My prediction is the Angels. They have money and a rotation with Trout, Pujols and Cespedes. My God, watch out pitchers.

There’s one word that can briefly conclude what will surely be an interesting offseason: Money. Lots and lots of it.
