Back Up Keeper

Back+Up+Keeper

As the varsity soccer season draws to an end, I had the chance to talk to the backup goalie, Matthew Muoio. Now although Matt started playing soccer this year, he has been following it his entire life and he won the Champions League 4 years in a row managing Arsenal*. This summer he recently decided to pick up the gloves and join the Varsity lads for his senior season. But coming on to the team as a backup is not an easy job. As the backup keeper, he described himself as a “brick wall,” as he is a very clinical keeper. Now most people may think that being the backup isn’t the greatest job but he embraced his role with the team. When I asked him about this he responded “I love working with the younger lads and teaching them things I have picked up over the years.” Not only does Matthew contribute to the team physically but also mentally. Before and after every practice and game Matthew does the team’s countdown. Upon joining the team he knew that it was going to be a challenge this year, but he predicted that next year would be a great year for the Rams. He believed that Coach Barresi and AJ “the program” Kopacz would come back stronger and get Oratory’s first State win in Non Public A. Thank you Matthew for your commitment to the team this year and good luck in your future endeavors in the world of football.
