Featured Teacher: Mr. Maybe

Paul Kellam, Staff Writer

This is Mr. Maybe’s First year at Oratory and he already feels like he’s fitting in great. Before coming to OP Mr. Maybe graduated from Eastern Connecticut State in 2008 with a B.S. in Health and Physical Education. For the last four years, he taught health and physical education at St. Mary’s Prep in Denville, NJ. In the past school year, he was appointed Athletic Director of the school and earned two certifications from the National Academy of Sports Medicine as a Fitness Nutrition Specialist and Youth Exercise Specialist.

Although this is Mr. Maybe’s first year at Oratory Prep, he already has quite a lot of responsibilities, namely:

  • Assistant JV Baseball Coach
  • P.E. Teacher
  • Health Teacher
  • Director of Intramurals
  • Head JV Basketball Coach

What are your first impressions of the school?

Overall, it’s a good place to work. There’s a small group of good kids and we have a lot of  fun together. My colleagues are helpful and willing to go the extra mile for a new co-worker.

Are you looking forward to any changes at Oratory?

I’m excited for new building with the fitness center and more classrooms. This could entice more people to use the weight room and have a fitness club.

What sport do you enjoy most?

I enjoy basketball the most.

What is something people at Oratory don’t know about you?

I am having a child in 2 weeks!

What do you like about being a Gym teacher?

I like being able to give back all the different skills I have acquired and i enjoy being apart of the activities. I enjoy what I do and kids feed off of that and it really helps them to get active.

What do you expect out of all your players and students?

I expect their best because I want them to push themselves and do the steps to be a leader as a student or player setting the right example.

What is your coaching experience in basketball and baseball prior to your time at Oratory?

I’ve been coaching both since 2008, I started out as a volunteer coach and coached both. Coached baseball and basketball a couple years back at my old high school I taught at.

What do you want your record to be for JV Baseball and Basketball?

Basketball right now is 14-6 and I would like to sweep the next 3 to be 17-6. As far as baseball goes, above .500. I would also like to develop the program to get kids on the next level and fundamentally sound.
