Champions League Round of 16 Preview
February 20, 2015
After a two month break, the Champions League is finally back. The first leg of the round of 16 starts on February 17 and ends on Feb 25. This round will have a lot of tight matches, and some blowouts.
PSG vs Chelsea
PSG is third in ligue 1 and are in bad form coming into this match. Cabaye, Marquinhos, and Lucas are all injured for the first leg. Chelsea is in first place in the premier league, and are in good form. Chelsea already beat PSG in the quarter finals last year and look like they can win again this year.
Shakhtar Donetsk vs Bayern Munich
Shakhtar are 2nd in the Ukrainian Premier League and are coming off a good win. However, they will be no match for Bayern Munich. Bayern are steamrolling through the Bundesliga, coming off a comfortable 8-0 win. Bayern should easily win this matchup in style.
Schalke vs Real Madrid
In a repeat of last years round of 16, Schalke will play Real Madrid. The 4th place German side will go against last years winners, who are in 1st place in Spain. Even though Cristiano Ronaldo is in horrible form, Real Madrid should easily take down Schalke.
Basel vs Porto
Basel will host Porto in the first leg. Basel got out of a tough group including Real Madrid and Liverpool to get here. Porto had an easy group, with the hardest team being Athletic Bilbao. Overall, Porto is the better team, and should move on comfortably.
Juventus vs Dortmund
Italian giants Juventus are facing Dortmund in the round of 16. Juventus lie in 1st place while Dortmund lie all the way in 15th in Germany. Although Dortmund is struggling in their league, they play really well in the champions league. Juventus doesn’t have a great defense, so I think Dortmund will progress to the next round.
Manchester City vs Barcelona
The Premier League champions face off against the inform Barcelona. Both teams are in 2nd place in their respective leagues. Manchester city are currently struggling while Barcelona have been blowing past the opposition. Barcelona should beat Manchester City in this round, and could possibly make it an embarrassingly big win.
Bayer Leverkusen vs Atletico Madrid
The 6th place German team will face off against last years finalist in this tournament. Atletico is in 3rd place in Spain and have their defence to thank for that. Leverkusen are struggling a little in their league, making Atletico look like the clear winners in this matchup.
Arsenal vs Monaco
For the first time in 100 years (really just 6), Arsenal isn’t going against a really tough team. 5th place Arsenal (English Premier League) is playing host to 5th place Monaco (Ligue 1). Arsenal has a really good team, and should easily beat Monaco. Monaco sold many of their good players, so it won’t be easy for them to get anything out of this match.
