Oratory has recently introduced a new club that seems to be the most popular yet! The Sports Enthusiasts Club (SEC) has been a hit from the beginning, as the club had too many members after the first meeting. Founding father Brian McReynolds says that he “couldn’t be more ecstatic with the turnout.” He states that he was extremely surprised by the large amount of underclassmen that showed up and everyone’s willingness to work together and be a contributing factor to the club.
The club meets every Monday morning in room 102 and after some brief announcements, the members split up into specific groups depending on what their favorite sport is. For example, if one’s favorite sport is football, they would be filtered into the football section and write an article about specific teams every week and make predictions. So far, the predictions have been pretty accurate and can be seen on the SEC’s web page, along with all of the other club activities. In addition to the weekly picks, everyone in the club has been filtered into a football “pick-em,” where teams were picked at the beginning of the season and if someone picks a team that wins, they get a certain amount of points. So far, this “pick-em” has been a very heated topic and is one of the most intense activities at Oratory.
One of the most exciting parts of this club is that the members will be heading out on multiple trips to sporting venues. These events include anything from NBA games to MLU (Major League Ultimate) games. The main goal of this is to get students to experience things they never would have if they had stuck inside their comfort zones. However the beauty of the SEC is that one doesn’t have to be a big-time fan to enjoy the club. As senior Max Hubbauer states, “The SEC provides an opportunity for fans, both avid and inexperienced alike, to enrich themselves and gain a greater insight into the sports world.” So, if you’re a sports enthusiast, then this is the perfect club for you!
