Shows to Watch this Summer

Arrested Development (Streaming on Netflix)

Arrested Development is one of the best comedies of the century and is a perfect show to binge over the summer. The show follows Michael Bluth, played by Jason Bateman, and the rest of the Bluth family while they go through their day-to-day lives. The strength of this show is in the cast as every member from Will Arnett to Michael Cera is perfectly cast and fit the weird tone that the show is going for. The first three seasons are perfect television as they present each character with hilarious and interesting arcs. The show also soars because it is presented in a unique way completely fits its oddball tone but it does take a few episodes to get used to. While the first three seasons of the show are iconic, the show returned for a fourth season in 2013 on Netflix and it was nowhere near the heights of the original because the main cast was not together that much on screen as the actors had scheduling conflicts. However, the fifth season is coming to Netflix in 2018, and it is confirmed that the cast will be together more often this time around. This show is extremely easy to watch and is a fun time to spend the summer.

Twin Peaks (Streaming On Netflix and Showtime)

Twin Peaks is one of the most iconic shows in television history and is in the midst of a limited 18-episode comeback on Showtime right now. When the show premiered in 1990 on NBC, the murder of homecoming queen Laura Palmer in Twin Peaks, Washington and the corresponding investigation by FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper, played by Kyle Maclachlan in a career-defining role, encapsulated the nation with the show, becoming the first “water-cooler” show where everybody was watching it. After NBC forced co-creators David Lynch and Mark Frost to reveal Laura’s killer midway through season 2, quality and viewership dropped dramatically. Although the show found its footing again in the final episodes of season 2, viewership did not return and the show was cancelled. Lynch and Frost then teamed up in 1992 with the film, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me which chronicled the final week of Laura Palmer’s life, but the film was a box-office failure. The show has achieved a cult status over time with its numerous quirky, weird characters becoming loved by many and the shows wickedly disturbing but hopeful atmosphere and the iconic score by Angelo Badalamenti helping to make the show as powerful as it is. Legendary film director David Lynch (Mulholland Dr., The Elephant Man) has re-teamed with Mark Frost for an 18-episode revival on Showtime which premiered on May 21st with a two-hour premiere that combined episodes one and two. The revival perfectly captures what was so great about the original show and updates it to the point that it is the best show that is currently on air by far. Twin Peaks is a beautiful and deeply compelling show that will enrapture you from the opening theme of the pilot.

Silicon Valley (Streaming on HBO Go)

Silicon Valley is one of the smartest and most hilarious shows on television right now. The show follows the misadventures of Richard Hendricks, played to perfection by Thomas Middleditch, and his friends as they try to become the next big Silicon Valley billionaires. The best quality of this show is the chemistry that the main cast has with each other. T.J. Miller (Deadpool), Martin Starr (Freaks and Greeks) and Kumail Nanjiani (Upcoming The Big Sick) among many others imbue the show with a sense of realism since they talk to each other like how guys talk to their friends in real-life and perfectly portray “tech” guys. The show also soars because of its brilliant writing since the writing staff for the show is comprised of comedy writers and tech people in order to make the show as realistic as possible. This show is just loads of fun and a perfect way to pass time during the summer.
