On April the 10, Disney released the teaser for the upcoming film Thor: Ragnarok. Now, this film is going to be a hodgepodge of two famous Marvel storylines. The first is the Thor storyline, Ragnarok, which borrows its name from the prophesied event of Norse mythology, Ragnarok. In which Asgard is destroyed. The same thing happens in comic, Asgard dies. The second storyline that Thor: Ragnarok is drawing inspiration from is Planet Hulk. In which Tony Stark, Dr. Strange, Professor X, Mr. Fantastic, Black Bolt, and Namor decide that Hulk is too dangerous to be on Earth. So they put him in a spaceship and they want to send him to a peaceful planet where he’ll be left alone. He wakes up in his spaceship before it reaches it’s destination, flips out, and he crashes on a planet where he’s not the strongest one there is. The rest of the plot is basically the film Gladiator but with Hulk and a bunch of really strong aliens. I hypothesize that this movie will borrow more from Planet Hulk than Ragnarok as Planet Hulk is a much more well-known(and frankly better) story than Ragnarok.
This teaser shows us a lot of the returning and new characters that will be appearing in the third Thor. We get our first at Cate Blanchett who looks amazing as Marvel’s version of Hela, the Norse goddess of death. That costume(the horned one) is exactly like the comics. How she blew up Thor’s hammer is a question that only the movie can answer as she’s never done that before? She’s the who destroys Asgard and appears to be the film’s main antagonist. We get a brief glimpse at Karl Urban as the villain, the Executioner(he’s the bald guy with the two guns) whose role in the plot remains to be determined. The trailer also introduces us to Jeff Goldblum as the Grandmaster. He’s a little hard to explain, but he’s like the Collector(the guy Benicio Del Toro played in Guardians of the Galaxy) if instead of collecting things he spent his existence making people play games. His favorite games to play are gladiatorial games, which in context makes a lot of sense as Thor’s appears to be a gladiator in the Grandmaster’s game.
Thor makeover was needed and looks awesome. It appears to be heavily inspired from Maximus in Gladiator as well as Thor;s current look in comics(see here http://media.comicbook.com/2016/07/kbcnzuswsnxst7ef9s8j-189290.png). Who knew that all it took to make Thor cool was no hammer, a haircut, and Led Zeppelin? Now Hulk, clad in his Planet Hulk armor, looks awesome. I don’t know what role Hulk will play in the film as he’s not the protagonist and I know everyone’s sick of superheroes fighting, but Hulk versus Thor is a welcome fight in any medium. Be it on a page, on the television, or on the silver screen a Hulk and Thor fight is always awesome. From this teaser, the third Thor appears to be action packed, refreshingly colorful(something the last Thor was seriously lacking), and most importantly a lot of fun.
