FROM FOOTBALL TO TEACHING TO COUNSELING A WELL VERSED MAN: MR. BROADHEAD

Mr. Broadhead is an extremely interesting man.  He is originally from Garfield in Bergen County, where he attended high school and played football.  When his high school career was behind him, Mr. Broadhead went on to the University of Maine to play college football.  After, a tremendous time in college football Mr. Broadhead attended Syracuse to gain a Masters Degree.  Before coming to Oratory, Mr. Broadhead had 35 plus years as a Phys Ed Teacher, Athletic Director, and Football Coach both at high school and collegiate levels. After coaching and teaching for many years at five different schools, Mr. Broadhead contemplated retirement, however, he had heard about a job opportunity at Oratory Prep, and just could not resist the offer. He decided to take the position of Middle School Guidance Counselor.  Plus, the fact that we don’t have a football team was a big selling point for his wife who wants him around at home and not coaching all fall.  This was all new for him since we are an all boys school, and he had only previously worked in the public school system. The fact that he would be dealing with 7th and 8th graders was also an allurement to the job because he was never around younger kids and wanted to change his work environment.

At home, Mr. Broadhead is a husband and a father of a daughter who is already well into her adulthood and two step-children who are 11 and 18 years old.  His step-son does not play football yet, but in a couple of years when he is older and stronger, he will play football and will have a great step-father with a wealth of experience to help him out.  He frequently throws the pigskin  around the backyard with his step-son and shows him what it takes to be a great quarterback.  Although Mr. Broadhead is not the owner of any pets he has always wanted a dog.

Oratory is not like any other place Mr. Broadhead has taught.  We have a strong sense of community here which is not the same at the public schools.  Things are done differently here like the fact that we have a formal dress code and other Catholic traditions, like service for example. He feels this prepares kids for their future because in the real world you can not show up to work in ripped sweatpants and a zip up hoodie.  Being the straight shooter he is, Mr. Broadhead will tell you not what you want to hear, but what you need to hear. This is a trait that sets him apart from counselors and teachers elsewhere. We are lucky to have him.
